Casey helps Union halt RBNY's unbeaten run
Jul 17, 2014 - 1:04 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Conor Casey scored a goal and assisted on another as the Philadelphia Union claimed a 3-1 win over Red Bull New York at PPL Park on Wednesday.Casey netted the opening goal after nine minutes before helping set up Fred's goal in the 51st to make it 2-0 to the hosts.
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored on the hour mark to reduce New York's deficit, but Sebastien Le Toux put the result away with a 69th-minute penalty kick that snaps New York's five-game unbeaten streak.
Andrew Wenger set up the first goal with some good work on the left wing as he drove a low ball into the penalty area for Casey, who took a touch, beat a defender and fired a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Luis Robles.
Zac MacMath had to be alert to keep out a close-range effort from Lloyd Sam just one minute later, but the Union was able to take the lead into halftime as New York looked sluggish in the opening half.
Philadelphia needed just six minutes after the break to double its lead as Sheanon Williams cross from the right wing was redirected by Casey into the path of Fred, who drove a low shot past Robles from the middle of the box.
Wright-Phillips went close with a header in the 57th, but he found the net a few minutes later when Thierry Henry laid a pass off inside the area that Wright-Phillips curled inside the right post.
A corner kick eight minutes later for the Union put a serious dent in New York's comeback hopes as Eric Alexander pulled down Maurice Edu, allowing Le Toux to fire home his spot kick, making it 3-1 to the hosts.
MacMath made the lead hold up with a double save in the 70th minute before he got down to keep out a header from Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo in the 76th.
