Timbers rally to top Rapids

Jul 19, 2014 - 5:17 AM Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Second-half goals from Max Urruti and Diego Valeri propelled the Portland Timbers to a 2-1 comeback win over the Colorado Rapids at Providence Park on Friday.

The Timbers went a goal down in the 16th minute when Colorado's Deshorn Brown netted his seventh goal of the campaign. However, Urruti came off the bench to level the contest in the 72nd before Valeri scored on a wonderful strike five minutes later to help the hosts snap a four-game winless skid.

Brown helped set up his goal in the 15th minute when his low shot forced Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to tip the ball around the post. The Rapids then made the most of the ensuing corner kick as Drew Moor's header was saved by Ricketts, only for Brown to bundle the ball over the goal line from close range.

Valeri had a dangerous free kick sail just over the crossbar in the 22nd minute, while the Timbers kept up the pressure a few minutes later as Fanendo Adi got in behind the Rapids defense and saw his shot saved by the legs of goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

Portland continued to press in the second half, but it wasn't until the 72nd minute that the Timbers were able to unlock Colorado's defense.

Will Johnson played the ball wide to Jack Jewsbury on the right and he delivered a low first-time pass to Urruti at the near post, allowing the substitute to turn home the equalizer.

Valeri then scored a goal five minutes later that is worthy of winning any match as he collected a pass from Diego Chara 30 yards from goal, took a touch, and lashed the ball inside the right post past the diving Irwin.
