Fernandez leads Vancouver past FCD

Oct 5, 2014 - 1:10 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC took a major step toward securing a postseason berth as Sebastian Fernandez provided both goals in the club's 2-0 defeat of FC Dallas at BC Place on Saturday.

The Whitecaps seized control of the match with Fernandez scoring twice in the span of four minutes.

The opener came in the 14th minute when Fernandez got on the end of Mauro Rosales' cross to the back post and nodded the delivery into the upper corner. Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez managed to get a hand to the shot but was unable to keep it out of the back of the net.

Fernandez doubled Vancouver's lead shortly after, taking a square pass from Rosales and poking a shot just inside the near post to complete his brace.

The 'Caps set up shop and neutralized the Dallas attacking threat the rest of the way to secure all three points and move to 43 points on the season, ensuring the fifth and final Western Conference playoff spot for at least another week.

Dallas remains in fourth place in the West on 48 points.
