Henry helps RBNY edge Houston

Oct 5, 2014 - 12:25 AM Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Red Bull New York took a giant step toward securing a postseason berth as Thierry Henry's second-half strike at Red Bull Arena on Saturday lifted the club to a 1-0 defeat of the Houston Dynamo.

Henry's goal, his 10th in league play this season, helped New York climb to 44 points on the season by granting the club a sixth successive home victory.

Houston, meanwhile, remains on 36 points to stay in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Bulls had the better of play in the opening period, creating a multitude of chances without capitalizing.

Bradley Wright-Phillips came close to breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute when he pounced on a loose ball in the box and slammed a left-footed shot off the crossbar.

New York would again be denied by the woodwork in the first half as Henry saw his superb free kick in the 38th minute come back off the bar.

But the hosts regrouped at halftime and opened the scoring within 90 seconds of the restart as a well-worked move down the right flank resulted in a square pass across the box that found Henry, who was waiting to tap the ball into the unguarded net.

Houston settled into the match and managed to apply a bit of pressure to Luis Robles' net, but the Red Bulls, despite a late red card for second-half substitute Tim Cahill, held on to collect all three points.
