Keane, Donovan shine as L.A. downs TFC
Oct 5, 2014 - 4:34 AM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Robbie Keane bagged a brace and Landon Donovan made history at the StubHub Center on Saturday as the Los Angeles Galaxy cruised to a 3-0 victory over Toronto FC.Keane scored twice in the span of three minutes to secure the win for the Galaxy and strengthen his case for MLS MVP honors.
Donovan, meanwhile, helped set up Keane's second goal of the match to become the all-time MLS leader with 136 career assists.
The result sees Los Angeles place additional pressure on Seattle Sounders FC to take maximum points from its clash with the Colorado Rapids on Sunday as the Galaxy improved to 60 points on the season to move into sole possession of first place in the overall MLS table.
Toronto remains in sixth place in the Eastern Conference on 40 points, falling three points back of the playoff divide.
Los Angeles nearly took the lead in the 13th minute of Saturday's affair when Juninho uncorked a dipping shot from distance, but the crossbar came to Joe Bendik's aid as the attempt rattled the woodwork.
It made no difference, though, as the Galaxy went in front in the 22nd minute as Keane took a nifty through ball from Marcelo Sarvas and slotted a shot just inside Bendik's left post.
The advantage was doubled in the 25th minute when Donovan's layoff to A.J. DeLaGarza was crossed into the box for Keane to smash home with a stunning volley.
Los Angeles maintained its two-goal lead until the final stages of the match when Alan Gordon unleashed a superb shot from the top of the penalty area to beat Bendik at his right post, capping a comprehensive victory for the home side.
