Whitecaps ease past Sporting KC at BC Place

Aug 11, 2014 - 2:11 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC snapped a string of four consecutive draws on Sunday after earning a comfortable 2-0 victory over defending champions Sporting Kansas City at BC Place.

The home side snagged the lead after 17 minutes through an own goal off the head of Sporting defender Igor Juliao and Darren Mattocks added a second goal with his sixth tally of the season in the 39th minute to hand all three points to Vancouver, which jumped into fifth place in the West with 32 points.

The defeat snapped an MLS-best eight-match unbeaten run for Sporting, but the defending champs remain on top of the Eastern Conference with 39 points, despite generating little in the way of offensive chances.

Vancouver took the lead with some good fortune in the 17th minute as a misplayed defensive header by Juliao looped over the head of a helpless Andy Gruenebaum for the own goal.

The Whitecaps doubled the advantage without the help of the Sporting defense in the 39th minute as Pedro Morales dribbled toward goal and did well to pull Aurelien Collin out of position before sliding it over to Darren Mattocks for an easy finish.

The home side then had an opportunity to make it 3-0 in the 84th minute as Omar Salgado was pulled down by Collin in the box and a penalty kick was given.

Mattocks stepped up looking for his second goal of the day but substitute goalkeeper Jon Kempin got a hand to the strike and it rang off the crossbar before being cleared off the line.

Despite the miss, the Whitecaps held on to claim an important three points.
