RSL secures playoff berth with defeat of San Jose

Oct 12, 2014 - 3:37 AM Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake locked up a playoff spot on Saturday by easing past the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0, at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The opening goal came in the 24th minute when a failed clearance went only as far as the top of the penalty area where Ned Grabavoy was waiting to unleash a shot that went through traffic and ended up in the back of the net.

Only four minutes passed before Salt Lake doubled its advantage as Sebastian Velasquez directed a corner kick into the back of the net with his knee.

It proved to be all Real Salt Lake would need to collect all three points as the hosts cruised to the final whistle with a clean sheet in tact.

Salt Lake (14-8-10) stays in third place by improving to 52 points on the season.

San Jose (6-15-11) sees its winless streak in league play run to 13 games, keeping the club on 29 points for the season.
