Perez fires FCD past Colorado and into third place

Oct 18, 2014 - 9:27 PM Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - A second-half penalty kick from Blas Perez was the difference as FC Dallas claimed a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, moving FCD into third place in the Western Conference.

Dallas has now won three of its last four matches to climb one point clear of Real Salt Lake for third place with one match to play, while the Rapids saw their winless streak reach 13 games.

A rather poor first half ended without either side really managing to produce a quality scoring chance.

But things finally picked up in the 55th minute when Colorado's Chris Klute handled the ball inside his own penalty area, giving Perez the chance to fire home his 11th goal of the season by beating goalkeeper Clint Irwin from the penalty spot.

Irwin kept his side within a goal by producing a nice save on Fabian Castillo after he worked a one-two on the edge of the box, but the Rapids chances of grabbing an equalizer were greatly reduced in the 79th when Jared Watts collected his second yellow card for a foul on Andres Escobar.
