Nguyen's goal is enough as Revs top struggling Chivas

Aug 24, 2014 - 1:57 AM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Lee Nguyen's second-half goal was enough to carry the New England Revolution to a 1-0 win over offensively-challenged Chivas USA at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams were in need of three points with the Revs having lost nine of their last 11 games, while Chivas has earned just one point from its previous five fixtures.

And Nguyen's 20-yard effort in the 56th minute was the difference as Revs claimed three valuable points to keep them in the playoff mix in the Eastern Conference.

Chivas, meanwhile, has failed to score in its last five games and remains on the bottom of the Western Conference.

The visitors were the more dangerous side in the first half and they nearly grabbed the lead in the 18th minute when Felix Borja turned with the ball and fired a shot on target that forced a fine stop from Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

Erick Torres then managed to slip between three New England defenders in the 41st minute but his shot skipped just past the far post, keeping the match scoreless at halftime.

New England didn't trouble Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy very often, but Nguyen was able to find space 20 yards from goal in the 56th minute to drive a shot past Kennedy, who got a hand to the ball but couldn't prevent it from finding the net.
