Piatti propels Montreal past Columbus

Aug 31, 2014 - 1:58 AM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Ignacio Piatti scored either side of halftime to lead the Montreal Impact to a 2-0 win over the Columbus Crew at the Stade Saputo on Saturday.

Montreal entered the match on the bottom of the Eastern Conference having lost eight of its last nine games, but Piatti scored his first goal for the club in the 40th minute and he added another in stoppage time to put the game away, ending the Crew's run of four wins in six games.

Piatti was a constant threat for the Impact and he was denied the opening goal on the half-hour mark by a fine diving stop from Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark.

However, Piatti was on the scoresheet 10 minutes later as he turned with the ball at the top of the penalty area and beat Clark with a left-footed shot.

The Crew was attempting to win a third straight game and the team put together a spell of pressure over the final 12 minutes with Aaron Schoenfeld turning a header on goal from Federico Higuain's corner kick before Tony Tchani was also denied by goalkeeper Evan Bush when he nodded a ball from Ben Speas on target.

Columbus was still pressing for the equalizer as the match entered stoppage time, and Marco Di Vaio helped kill the game off by leading a counter attack that resulted in Piatti netting his second goal of the match.
