DCU doubles up on RBNY

Aug 31, 2014 - 8:54 PM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - D.C. United moved four points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference on Sunday as second-half goals from Luis Silva and Eddie Johnson handed the club a 2-0 win over Red Bull New York at RFK Stadium.

New York had the better of the play in the first half and was unlucky not to take a lead into halftime. However, United responded after the break with Silva scoring in the 57th minute before Johnson netted his fifth goal of the campaign in stoppage time.

Bradley Wright-Phillips missed the left post by inches with a first-time shot after he was played into the penalty area by Thierry Henry, while the Englishman turned a header on goal from six yards in the 31st that was kept out by a sprawling save from goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who managed to tip the ball past the post.

Henry set up Tim Cahill at the top of the box a few minutes before the break for a shot that easily beat Hamid but came back off the left post.

The hosts were fortunate to still be level in the 57th minute, but Silva changed that when he ran on to a flicked header from Fabian Espindola and beat New York goalkeeper Luis Robles to the ball, touching it past the netminder and rolling a shot into the empty net.

With New York pushing men forward in the closing minutes United took advantage with a nice chipped ball from Perry Kitchen that released Johnson in behind the defense, where he flicked a ball over the head of Robles and into the net to cap the victory.
