Galaxy, 'Quakes battle to draw in California Clasico

Sep 14, 2014 - 9:03 PM Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Galaxy extended their unbeaten streak in league play to seven matches on Sunday after battling the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw in the California Clasico at Buck Shaw Stadium.

U.S. international defender Omar Gonzalez found the back of the net for Los Angeles in the first half, while fellow American international Chris Wondolowksi equalized for San Jose just past the hour mark.

The result moves Los Angeles to 51 points on the season, within four of first- place Seattle in the West, while San Jose moves to 28 points, but remains in eighth in the West nine points behind Vancouver for the final playoff spot.

The visiting side snagged the lead in the 28th minute when Gonzalez rose highest on a Stefan Ishizaki corner kick and nodded it past 'Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch for his fourth tally of the season.

The Galaxy then had an opportunity to double the lead late in the half when San Jose defender Jason Hernandez handled the ball in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.

Robbie Keane stepped to the spot for Los Angeles, but blasted it off the crossbar as it remained 1-0 to LA at the break.

The home side drew level in the 66th minute when Wondolowski got on the end of an errant strike from Jordan Stewart on the right side of the penalty area and scooped it past Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe with ease for his 14th goal of the campaign.

Things got physical as the match wore on and the fourth official's board showed five minutes of stoppage time, but neither side could find a winning tally and the rivals were forced to share the spoils.
