Seattle holds off FCD to reach West finals
Nov 11, 2014 - 5:55 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - The match failed to produce a goal, but it provided plenty of excitement as Seattle Sounders FC advanced to the Western Conference finals on Monday based on away goals after a 0-0 draw with FC Dallas at CenturyLink Field. The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Dallas, meaning that FCD needed at least one goal on Monday to advance.
But it was Seattle that provided most of the chances over the course of 90 minutes, and the result is enough to put the Supporters' Shield winners into the Western Conference final against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Clint Dempsey was the most dangerous man on the field for either side, and he tested Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz in the seventh minute with a powerful shot from a tight angle that the netminder tipped over the crossbar.
Chad Marshall went even closer for the Sounders in the 28th when he turned a header on goal from a corner kick, only for FCD's Michel to clear the ball off the goal line.
Dempsey and Obafemi Martins then combined on a good chance shortly before halftime with the United States international driving a first-time shot on goal that Seitz did well to parry.
Dallas continued to find itself under pressure and the visitors narrowly escaped in the 68th when a deflected shot from the top of the box off the foot of Dempsey sailed just past the left post.
Another chance fell to Dempsey with six minutes to play when a failed clearance from Dallas defender Matt Hedges fell straight to the Sounders forward, whose low shot was blocked by the legs of Seitz.
The hosts only needed a 0-0 draw to advance, and in the end, Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei only needed to make one save to keep a clean sheet, sending the Sounders through to the next round.
