New York halts losing skid against nine-man RSL

Jun 25, 2015 - 1:34 AM Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Red Bull New York snapped a four-game losing skid on Wednesday as Mike Grella scored in the fourth minute and the team held on for a 1-0 win over nine-man Real Salt Lake at Red Bull Arena.

New York had taken just one point from its previous five outings, and after Grella's early goal, the hosts were helped by the fact that both Javier Morales and Demar Phillips were sent off.

Grella's goal was just the start New York was looking for as he arrived the back post to finish off a wayward shot from Sean Davis.

RSL nearly answered two minutes later as Devon Sandoval's close-range header forced a nice diving stop from New York goalkeeper Luis Robles.

The match then took a turn five minutes before halftime when Morales brought down Felipe on the break, earning the Salt Lake midfielder a straight red card.

And just 10 minutes after the restart, the visitors went down another man as Phillips came in with a poor challenge on New York's Connor Lade.

But despite playing up two men for the final 35 minutes, New York was unable to add to the lead, due in large part to goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

He did well to keep out a low shot from Felipe before defender Tony Beltran cleared a ball off the line.

Matt Miazga also tested Rimando with a dangerous shot in the closing minutes, but the Salt Lake goalkeeper kept his side within a goal, although they couldn't muster much in attack.
