Doyle's blast fires DCU past Chicago
Jun 25, 2015 - 2:35 AM Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - A rocket from Conor Doyle in the 73rd minute was the difference as D.C. United edged the Chicago Fire, 1-0, on Wednesday at Toyota Park. There wasn't a lot to separate the teams as chances were few and far between, but Doyle's wonderful strike in the second half helped United to a fourth win in six games, while Chicago has lost its last four fixtures.
The few opportunities that were created came mainly in the second half with the first arriving in the 50th minute when Luis Silva's free kick found the head of Bobby Boswell, who turned the ball on goal and forced goalkeeper Sean Johnson to tip it around the post.
Chicago had a good chance a few minutes later when a good cross from Harry Shipp was just beyond the reach of a sliding Jason Johnson, who just needed to get a touch on the ball.
The decisive moment came in the 73rd when Chicago's Eric Gehrig slid in to block a shot that rebounded to Doyle, who smashed a shot into the net from 25 yards.
The Fire had a late opportunity in the 88th minute when a free kick was cleared as far as Guly Do Prado, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
