Quick strikes lead Revs past Fire
Jun 14, 2015 - 1:33 AM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Revolution struck twice in a span of two second-half minutes to earn a 2-0 victory over East rivals Chicago Fire on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.New England, the East representative in MLS Cup final last season, has hit a bit of a bump in the road as of late, coming into Saturday's affair riding a six-match winless run.
Both team created quality opportunities in the first half, but neither side could find the breakthrough as the clubs went into the intermission scoreless.
The Revs grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck just three minutes into the second half when Diego Fagundez marked his 100th appearance in a Revolution shirt by blasting a wicked strike with pace into the top corner to put the hosts in front.
Just two minutes later the home side doubled its lead as Teal Bunbury served an excellent cross into the box where Charlie Davies was able to get his head to it, nodding it into the bottom corner for his team-leading sixth goal of the campaign.
Chicago created a handful of chances in the second half, but was a bit off with its finishing all night and ultimately suffered its third straight defeat to remain stuck on 14 points from 14 matches played.
