Revs square off with Galaxy in MLS Cup rematch

May 29, 2015 - 7:11 PM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - A rematch of the 2014 MLS Cup will take place at Gillette Stadium on Sunday as the Los Angeles Galaxy square off with the New England Revolution.

The Galaxy claimed the MLS Cup in December with a 2-1 extra-time win over the Revs, and Bruce Arena's team will be looking to claim another victory over New England in the only regular-season meeting between the two sides this year.

Los Angeles comes into the match with a bit of momentum having won back-to- back games following a five-match winless streak, while the Revs have failed to win any of their last four fixtures.

Juninho's seventh-minute penalty kick was enough for a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, and the Galaxy will continue their busy month of May on Sunday with a cross-country trip that will see the team play its third game in nine days.

"I think I said it three weeks ago, I see this team kicking on," said Galaxy forward Robbie Keane, who just recently returned from a seven-game injury absence. "Still have players to come in, and still players that aren't fully fit either. So we are going in the right direction."

The Galaxy comes into the weekend three points from the top of the Western Conference, and defender Omar Gonzalez hopes his team can cap a trying month on a positive note, while also crediting the entire staff for the effort.

"We knew going into the month of May that it was going to be a very tough month," said Gonzalez. "Seven games in one month isn't easy, especially going to the east coast twice. But I think the medical staff, the coaching staff, everyone has done a great job making sure at making sure that they provide everything for us to recover properly."

"We knew that it was going to be a busy schedule, we're still going and we want to finish off the month strong."

Arena's men will likely be attempting to accomplish that without the services of three defenders in A.J. DeLaGarza, Todd Dunivant and Robbie Rogers, who each missed out on Wednesday's match through injury.

The club will also be attempting to collect its first road victory of the season, going 0-4-3 away from the StubHub Center this year.

Despite the winless streak New England brings into the game, the club is still just two points back of Eastern Conference leaders D.C. United, who salvaged a 1-1 draw with the Revs last weekend despite Jay Heaps' team playing the final 30 minutes with nine men.

A first-half goal from Charlie Davies had New England in front, but after missing a few chances to extend that lead, both Chris Tierney and Lee Nguyen were sent off, ruling both out for Sunday's clash through suspension.

Jairo Arrieta managed to level the match 10 minutes from time, but Heaps was left to rue the fact that his team didn't finish the match when they had the chance.

"I think we've been really good at times, but we need to finish teams," Heaps said. "I think we were in a situation where we were really good in that first half against D.C., and we would've liked to have put more than just one goal away. So even if we had dropped a man or two men, we're in a position where we can win the game."

New England has scored the opening goal in each of their past four games, but has only a 0-1-3 record to show for it, illustrating Heaps' point about needing to find a way to close games out.
