United tops Chivas, captures first win
May 7, 2007 - 12:45 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The elusive search for Jamie Moreno and D.C. United is over.Moreno scored on a penalty kick early in the second half as United collected their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Chivas USA.
Winless in their first four games of the season following a 1-1 tie to the New England Revolution on Thursday, United finally broke through thanks to a flurry of scoring and some solid goalkeeper by Troy Perkins.
"It's great to get our first win of the MLS season," D.C. United coach Tom Soehn said. "This was our third game in three weeks and it took its toll on some of the guys, but we overcame that and our play was good especially in the second half."
"I was satisfied with my play and our overall team play," Perkins said. "Getting this first win was important."
United opened the scoring in the 48th minute when Christian Gomez collected his second goal of the season.
Shortly thereafter, United got another quality scoring chance in the 65th minute when Chivas midfielder Francisco Mendoza was given a yellow card after he brought down Kasali Yinka Casal toward the top right of the 18-yard box, setting up a penalty shot.
Despite the hard foul, a handful of Chivas players questioned whether it should have been a penalty shot.
"It's such a subjective call," goalkeeper Brad Guzan said. "The question is was the player in the box, or one step from the box. I don't know? It's the ref's call."
Moreno made the most of the foul, fooling Guzan by chipping in his second goal of the season for a 2-0 lead.
That would be all that United would need, as Chivas struggled to get quality scoring chances, managing just a goal by Maykel Galindo in the 73rd minute.
It was the third of the season for Galindo, who dribbled in on goal before beating Perkins with a low shot to the right.
"I was trying to do something for the team, being down 2-0," Galindo said. "I just used my speed, my skills and my talent and it went in."
Perkins finished with eight saves.
