Donovan continues stellar play, helps Galaxy tie Chivas
May 21, 2007 - 3:16 AM CARSON, California (Ticker) -- Despite a slow start to the season, the Los Angeles Galaxy were not about to release the hold they have on crosstown rival Chivas USA in the Super Clasico.Landon Donovan scored a goal in the 50th minute as the Galaxy played Chivas USA to a 1-1 tie at the Home Depot Center on Sunday.
Donovan, who had a goal and two assists in the Galaxy's 3-1 victory over Chivas on April 28, has five goals against Chivas and has played a big part in Los Angeles' success against Chivas over his career.
He has been instrumental in spurring the Galaxy to a 7-1-2 record against Chivas in the Super Clasico, outscoring them, 18-6.
In the 50th minute, Chivas' Claudio Suarez tried to clear the ball but his attempt fell right to Donovan's feet. From 16 yards out, Donovan settled the ball and slipped it into the left corner of the net, easily getting it by Chivas goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
"Claudio goes up for the ball and he heads it anywhere else and it's not a goal," Chivas coach Preki said. "(Instead), he bounces it straight to Landon and it's a goal.
"(That) is what we expect from Donovan (when Chivas plays the Galaxy). He's one of the best in the league."
The second-half goal matched an earlier goal by Chivas forward Maykel Galindo, who scored against the run of play in the 35th minute. Late in the first half, he fired a left-footed shot into the lower left quadrant of the goal past Los Angeles goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
"He (Galindo) is very fast. If we try to play him offsides, sometimes it's going to work and other times it won't," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said. "But if you play that way, you're going to take that chance, and (on the goal he) got through on us."
U.S. national team member and Galaxy midfielder-defender Chris Albright left the field in the 15th minute with an unspecified injury. He was on the bench later on crutches after being replaced by midfielder Nathan Sturgis.
