Galindo, Razov lead Chivas USA past rival FC Dallas
May 27, 2007 - 6:43 AM CARSON, California (Ticker) -- Only two things stood between FC Dallas and an undefeated month - Maykel Galindo and an empty net.Galindo scored in the 51th minute and Ante Razov added an empty-netter as Chivas USA posted a 2-0 victory over FC Dallas, registering their first win in over a month.
Dallas, which was going for their third straight road win, had recorded three straight 2-1 victories - against Kansas City, Chicago and Real Salt Lake - to start the month of May undefeated for the first time since 1997.
"We didn't play our best," Dallas coach Steve Marrow said. "We've played very well recently. We've had three wins in three games. Until tonight, we've missed the chance to go to the top of the standings. I felt that our play in the attacking third of the field wasn't good enough tonight."
Chivas, which last won on April 21 against Real Salt Lake, grabbed three much-needed points from their Western Division rival.
"People ask me how important it is to score and what I'm really trying to do is get three points from a victory," Galindo said.
In the 51st minute, Galindo slid to steal the ball from a Dallas defender inside the midfield area, gained his feet quickly and fired a long strike past goalkeeper Dario Sala. The goal was his team-leading fifth of the season.
"I caught the goalkeeper backpedaling," Galindo said. "At that point, I felt a bit unlucky because of what had happened in the first half. I'm not so much worried about scoring goals. I'm trying to help my team win games."
In the 90th minute, Razov took advantage of a desperate attempt by the Dallas offense to tie the game. The 33-year-old forward played a loose ball at midfield, headed a few steps upfield and lofted a kick that sailed more than 40 yards into an empty net past Sala, who had crept up to near midfield in an effort to pressure the Chivas defense.
"We have to minimize our mistakes," Sala said. "We were fortunate to not have been scored on a few times in the first half.
"The second goal, I was trying to put pressure on their midfield and, unfortunately, it backfired. But at that point in the game, it doesn't really matter. We're trying to tie the game."
Chivas snapped their winless streak at four games and remained undefeated at home with a 3-0-1 record.
"We are looking forward to the week off to heal some wounds and hopefully we'll get ready to go on the road," Chivas coach Preki said. "It's important for us now to get results on the road. Out of our next five games, I think we have four on the road.
