FRANKFURT(AP) -- Chinedu Obasi equalized for Hoffenheim to earn a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich on Saturday to open the Bundesliga season.

Obasi's goal in the 41st minute canceled out Ivica Olic's and partly spoiled new Bayern coach Louis van Gaal's Bundesliga debut, 58th birthday and wedding anniversary.

"First game for Bayern - first goal. But I am disappointed that we didn't win," Olic said. "Still, we can live with the point."

Kevin Kuranyi scored twice to give Schalke and new coach Felix Magath a winning start with a 2-1 victory at promoted Nuremberg. Kuranyi scored in the 36th minute after a fast break and a pass from Jefferson Farfan, and collected his second goal in the 50th.

Nuremberg now hasn't defeated Schalke in the top division for 13 games.

Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-2 at Werder Bremen thanks to two goals from Ioannis Amanatidis, Borussia Dortmund beat FC Cologne 1-0, Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 at promoted Mainz, and Hertha Berlin edged Hannover 1-0 on a goal from Gojko Kacar.

Defending champion Wolfsburg also got off to a winning start Friday, beating Stuttgart 2-0 after second-half goals from Zvjezdan Misimovic and Grafite.

In Bremen, Eintracht took an early lead when Amanatidis slotted home a pass from Selim Teber after a counterattack in the sixth minute. Bremen recovered in the 13th when midfielder Mesut Oezil earned a penalty and then converted it himself, before Amanatidis struck again.

Bremen, the defending German Cup champion, replied almost immediately when Boubacar Sanogo equalized. Amanatidis had to leave the game at the start of the second half because of a knee injury, and his replacement Martin Fenin scored the winner in the 71st minute.

In Dortmund, Cologne played without striker Lukas Podolski, who's returned to the club from Bayern Munich but was unavailable because of a thigh injury. Cologne held off Dortmund until the 75th minute, when defender Marvin Matip diverted a shot into his own net.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes saw his team lose a 2-1 lead at Mainz and had to settle for the draw. Heynckes came out of retirement last season to guide Bayern in the last five games following the firing of Juergen Klinsmann.

Hertha Berlin and Hannover played an uneventful match until Kacar scored in the 82nd.

PARIS (AP) - American striker Charlie Davies made his debut in the French league, coming on for Sochaux's scorer Vaclav Sverkos in the 71st minute of a 1-0 victory over Auxerre.

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps got off to a winning start in his first French league match in charge, with Mamadou Niang and Benoit Cheyrou scoring Saturday in a 2-0 win at Grenoble.

Including last season, Marseille has now won its last nine away games.

Rennes beat newly promoted Boulogne 3-0 at home after goals from Ismael Bangoura, Kader Mangane and Jerome Leroy, and seven-time champion Lyon needed a last-minute free-kick goal from new signing Lisandro Lopez to grab a point after twice trailing in a 2-2 draw at Le Mans.

Paris Saint-Germain conceded an equalizer in the fourth minute of injury time in a 1-1 draw at newly promoted Montpellier, while PSG's Claude Makelele almost scored a rare goal when his shot was saved by goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren, but the rebound fell to Ludovic Giuly and the former France winger knocked home the ball.

In other results, Monaco beat Toulouse 1-0; Nice beat Saint-Etienne 2-0 and Nancy beat Valenciennes 3-1. On Sunday, Bordeaux hosts Lens and Lille hosts Lorient.

DONCASTER, England (AP) - U.S. defender Jay DeMerit was Watford's captain as it opened its League Championship season with a 1-1 tie against Doncaster.

Also Saturday, former England and Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson made a winning return with Notts County routing Bradford 5-0 on the opening day of the League Two season.

County finished 19th in League Two last season.

Alan Shearer is still after the Newcastle manager's job despite Joe Kinnear's assertion that he's been offered a two-year contract. After relegation from the Premier League last season, the Magpies have been without a manage and owner Mike Ashley has struggled to sell the club.

The team rallied from a goal down Saturday for a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

AMSTERDAM (AP) - Ajax captain Luis Suarez scored a hat trick Saturday to lead his team to a 4-1 win over RKC Waalwijk and its second straight victory in the Dutch league.
