Revolution M Dempsey transfers to English Premier League

Jan 10, 2007 - 4:27 PM FOXBORO, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- New England Revolution midfielder Clint Dempsey is on his way to the English Premier League.

Major League Soccer announced on Wednesday that Dempsey has been transferred to Fulham FC.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dempsey's appeal for a United Kingdom work permit from the British Home Office was successful following a review panel hearing in London on Tuesday.

Dempsey was named to the MLS All-Star team in each of his three seasons in New England after being selected in the first round of the 2004 MLS SuperDraft.

In 71 games with the Revolution, Dempsey recorded 25 goals and 14 assists.

"We're pleased this opportunity worked out for Clint," Revolution coach Steve Nicol said. "We wish him nothing but the best as he heads to the Premiership.

"He has been a tremendous player for us. Clint developed his game a great deal during his time with the Revolution. It's a great credit to him and the level of play in MLS that Fulham pushed so hard to get him."

Dempsey won MLS Rookie of the Year honors in 2004 after scoring seven goals in 24 games. In his second season, Dempsey netted 10 goals and nine assists as the Revolution won the Eastern Conference championship and reached the MLS Cup.

Last season, Dempsey scored eight goals and added four assists in 21 games as the Revolution again advanced to the MLS Cup.

Dempsey was also chosen to represent the United States at the World Cup in Germany in June and scored the only goal in a loss against Ghana.

Overall, Dempsey has earned 23 caps with the U.S. National Team and scored six goals, including a team-high four in 2005.

Fulham FC sits in 12th place in the Premier League table with 27 points and a 6-7-9-1 record. He will join fellow Americans Brian McBride and Carlos Bocanegra at Craven Cottedge. Simon Elliot, formerly of the Columbus Crew and Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS and the A-League Boston Bulldogs, also plays for Fulham.
