Wondolowski's goals lead Earthquakes over United

Oct 10, 2010 - 4:05 AM WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chris Wondolowski scored twice and the San Jose Earthquakes clinched the first playoff appearance since their rebirth with a 2-0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night.

The Earthquakes, who reformed in 2008 after the original team became the Houston Dynamo in 2006, needed a win and a Kansas City loss to clinch a playoff spot. Seattle beat Kansas City 2-1 later Saturday.

United (6-19-3) set a club record for defeats in a single season. They went 8-18-6 in 2000.

Wondolowski scored his 13th and 14th goals to move within one of the club's single-season goal scoring record. He hammered Tim Ward's bouncing cross past goalkeeper Troy Perkins moments before halftime, then reached Perkins' errant punch and tucked a shot into an open net in the 55th minute.

D.C.'s Jaime Moreno and San Jose's Brandon McDonald were both sent off in the eighth minute after an off-the-ball altercation.
