Crew post third straight shutout to draw Chivas

Apr 10, 2011 - 5:05 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - William Hesmer made two saves to post his third straight shutout and lead the Columbus Crew to a 0-0 tie against Chivas USA on Saturday night in Major League Soccer.

Columbus lost its opener at D.C. United, 3-1, but Hesmer has been flawless in the last three weeks to lead the Crew (1-1-2) to two draws and a win.

Dan Kennedy posted his first shutout of the season for Chivas (0-2-2), which is winless through four matches under new coach Robin Fraser.

Both goalies made one key save, with Kennedy denying the Crew's Eddie Gaven on a breakaway in the 74th minute. Kennedy dove to get his fingertips on Gaven's shot from 18 yards, pushing it just wide of the right post.

Hesmer didn't have to work as hard, as Nick LaBrocca fired a volley from close range right to the Crew goalie later in the second half. Columbus also escaped a late scare, when a loose ball in the area was cleared by Dilly Duka.

Chivas will try to earn its first win of the season on April 16 at expansion Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Columbus hosts Sporting Kansas City on April 16.
