Sporting, Revs hoping to rebound at Gillette Stadium
Apr 23, 2011 - 12:16 AM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City and the New England Revolution renew their Eastern rivalry when the Major League Soccer teams square off at Gillette Stadium on Saturday. Both teams are coming off 1-0 losses in their last league fixtures and will be aiming to rebound on Saturday.
The Revs are coming off a loss to Houston, their second straight loss after opening the season unbeaten in the first four games.
Against Houston the Revs played without midfielders Shalrie Joseph and Pat Phelan because of suspension, and it showed as the team lacked the connection from the middle of the field to the forwards
"We didn't use the ball well enough to get forward," Nicol told The Boston Globe. "We had to make a lot of changes and it's hard to have cohesion when you're making changes. But we feel we deserved a point after what we put into it. It's disappointing the way it ended up. Had it been a good play, good passing, a good finish, you would feel better about it."
Kansas City's 1-0 loss was it's third straight MLS fixture without a win, including losses in two of those games. Most troubling was the fact that Sporting, the league's highest scoring team heading into the match, was shut out at Columbus.
"I thought we had a good first half and we created some very good chances in the first half," Sporting coach Peter Vermes said. "Coming in 0-0 at halftime was good being away from home. The goal [Columbus] scored was a really good finish by Robbie [Rogers]. Outside of that there was one other big save that our 'keeper made and that was really it. I thought we had some really good chances but I don't think we ever really tested [Columbus goalkeeper William] Hesmer."
Sporting will have to find a way to break through without the services of forwards Konrad Warzycha and Omar Bravo and midfielder Luke Sassano because of injuries. Defender Julio Cesar is also out because of a suspension.
New England midfielder Andrew Sousa is doubtful, while midfielder Ousmane Dabo and defender Didier Domi are questionable, because of injuries.
