Portland puts an end to RSL's unbeaten streak

May 1, 2011 - 4:54 AM Portland, OR (Sports Network) - The Portland Timbers put an end to Real Salt Lake's 18-game unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer on Saturday at Jeld-Wen Field, downing RSL 1-0 on a goal from Kenny Cooper.

Jason Kreis' side was coming off of a disappointing defeat at home to Monterrey in the final of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday, and they fell behind in the 22nd minute when Kalif Alhassan got down the left wing and crossed the ball to the front of goal for Cooper, who volleyed it home from close range.

The visitors were then left to chase the match and nearly equalized 10 minutes later when the ball found the back of the net but was ruled out for a foul.

Salt Lake (4-1-0) had won its first four games of the season and really turned up the pressure over the final 30 minutes.

But Portland (3-3-1) held out for its first clean sheet in MLS when a cross from Javier Morales found the head of Nat Borchers, who turned the ball straight at goalkeeper Troy Perkins in the 90th minute.

The Timbers may struggle away from home, claiming just one point from their first four away games, but the team has now won all three of its games at Jeld-Wen Field.
