Donovan leads L.A. to 4-1 win over Kansas City
May 15, 2011 - 4:36 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Landon Donovan scored twice to extend his streak of goals to seven straight for Los Angeles, before Juan Pablo Angel and David Beckham scored in the Galaxy's 4-1 win over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.Donovan had scored L.A.'s last five goals, and converted from the penalty spot late in the first half and added his second goal in the opening minute of the second half. Donovan leads Major League Soccer in scoring with seven goals.
Angel added his second of the season in the 64th and Beckham scored off one of his patented free kicks in the 87th, as L.A. overcame an own goal from Omar Gonzalez to remain undefeated at The Home Depot Center.
Los Angeles (5-2-5) has three wins and two draws at home and leads the Western Conference.
Sporting Kansas City (1-5-1) continues to struggle on its 10-game road trip to open the season, as its winless run reached six games. Kansas City has not won since its season opener on March 19, losing five of six since.
L.A. was winless in its last three matches, settling for two ties to go with a loss, and Gonzalez gifted Kansas City the lead when he turned the ball inside his own net in the 39th minute.
But the Galaxy responded before half when David Beckham was fouled inside the area, and Donovan slotted to the left side with K.C. goalkeeper Eric Kronberg diving the other way.
Los Angeles pulled in front just 30 seconds after half, as a quick throw in by Sean Franklin set up a quick give-and-go by Donovan and Chad Barrett, with the United States star completing the play with a shot off Kronberg.
Angel, who came off the bench, earned Barrett a second assist when he ran onto a headed pass and slotted a right-footed shot past Kronberg to the bottom left to push L.A.'s lead to three goals.
Beckham capped the victory with an incredible free kick, which he curled from the left side of the area over the wall and into the upper-left corner past a helpless Kronberg, who was making his first start this season for K.C.
L.A. remains at The Home Depot Center for its next match, an away game against Chivas USA in the SuperClasico on May 21. K.C. will try to solve its road woes at Seattle Sounders FC on May 21.
