Braun's hat trick helps Chivas surprise New York
May 16, 2011 - 1:35 AM Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Justin Braun scored a hat trick and Chivas USA surprised Red Bull New York, 3-2, at Red Bull Arena on Sunday in Major League Soccer.Braun was scoreless in seven appearances this season, but scored in the sixth, 21st and 56th minutes, helping Chivas win for the third time in its last four. Chivas (3-3-3) has just one loss in its last seven matches.
Thierry Henry and Dwayne De Rosario scored for New York (4-2-3), which dropped its first match at home in five games this year and had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Braun opened the scoring inside six minutes, as he drove along the top edge of the penalty area from the left and unleashed a curling shot into the top-right corner from 18 yards despite having a defender on his hip.
Henry had New York even in the 21st when he settled a pass from Rafael Marquez and hit a right-footed shot to the far post for his fifth goal of the season.
But Chivas added its second goal 10 minutes later, as Heath Pearce sent a free kick to the left side of the area, where Alejandro Moreno saved it on the line and passed to Braun, who converted from a tight angle for his second goal.
The Red Bulls trailed for only four minutes this time, as Luke Rodgers drew a penalty kick that De Rosario converted to celebrate his 33rd birthday with his first goal for New York since being acquired in a trade with Toronto FC.
Braun, who scored nine goals last season, had one more left as Chivas took the lead for the third time 11 minutes into the second half. Moreno headed a free kick on target that N.Y. goalie Bouna Coundoul pushed off the right post, but it rolled back across the goal line and Braun tapped in at the left post.
Rodgers came close to tying the game for New York in the 72nd, but his bicycle from 10 yards was correctly erased for offside, and not even the introduction of young American striker Juan Agudelo could help N.Y. produce another goal.
Chivas hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy in the SuperClasico on Saturday, when New York visits the Houston Dynamo for its next match.
