L.A., United battle to scoreless draw

Jun 4, 2011 - 5:03 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Galaxy kept its fourth successive clean sheet on Friday at The Home Depot Center, but the club failed to find the net itself in a 0-0 draw with D.C. United.

The Galaxy (8-2-6) was playing without leading scorer Landon Donovan, who is away on international duty, and it showed as the home side struggled in the final third, while United had the better of the chances to grab all three points.

Josh Wolff squandered a good opportunity midway through the first half for the visitors when he failed to finish off a low cross from Andy Najar at close range, while the Galaxy carved out a chance in the 57th minute when a quickly- taken free kick from David Beckham was headed wide by Chad Barrett.

A long throw in skipped through traffic in front of the Galaxy goal a few minutes later, settling on the foot of Wolff six yards from the net. However, he failed to put the shot on target as it sailed past the near post.

Charlie Davies entered the match in the 67th minute and got on the other end of a good through ball from Wolff 10 minutes from time. He burst into the penalty area, rounded goalkeeper Josh Saunders, but shot wide of the net from a tight angle.

The result extends unbeaten streaks for both teams as United's (4-4-4) mark reaches five games, while L.A. has gone seven matches without defeat.
