RSL tops Whitecaps FC at Rio Tinto Stadium

Jun 5, 2011 - 3:36 AM Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - For the first time since April 9, Real Salt Lake was able to score more than a goal in a game.

The goal outburst was wasted, however, because RSL only needed one anyway, topping the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night.

Jean Alexandre scored a first-half goal while setting up Fabian Espindola for a second-half tally for his first MLS goal and assist to lead RSL to victory, its first in its past four league fixtures.

Alexandre's opener came in the 32nd minute when he just stayed onside and collected a Kyle Beckerman feed before driving into the penalty area, deking around defender Mouloud Akloul with a step-over, and slotting the ball home.

Alexandre set up the insurance tally in the 79th when he played a through-ball to Espindola, who finished easily for his second goal of the season.

The clean sheet was the seventh in 10 games for RSL this season, and sixth for No. 1 goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

RSL (6-2-2) hopes to build on the solid effort at Columbus on Wednesday, while Vancouver (1-6-6) aims to rebound at Seattle next Saturday in its next MLS match.
