Red Bulls, Revs hope to break respective slumps in Eastern tilt

Jun 9, 2011 - 10:07 PM Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York hosts the New England Revolution at Red Bull Arena on Friday night, hoping that the recent past hold true when it comes to the usual results between the two Eastern foes.

The last time a road team won in the series came in 2007, a 1-0 Revolution victory at Giants Stadium.

Not that the Red Bulls (4-2-7) will be gunning for their fifth-straight tie. In all actuality, they will be gunning to snap a six-game winless run, even though they have only lost once during that stretch.

The most recent result, a 1-1 tie with Columbus this past weekend, felt like a loss because the team gave up the equalizer two minutes into second-half stoppage time.

"In Europe, we would have had a fight easy, because that's unacceptable," New York striker Thierry Henry told the league's website of the Crew's goal last Saturday. "Sometimes as men you have to say what's on your chest and move on. It's nothing personal."

Apparently the team has moved on and is preparing for a battle with New England instead of a battle on the practice field or in the locker room with teammates.

"You need to see [the reaction] in a competitive game," New York coach Hans Backe told his club's website. "I think it is difficult to see in practice. Some teams, you can see in practice, they go bananas. I think we need to wait until Friday."

Things aren't exactly going smoothly for the Revolution (3-6-4) either, at this point. The team has scored just two goals in its last six games, losing four of those, including three straight. The Revs also have back-to-back shutout losses, including a 1-0 setback at Dallas last week.

"We haven't scored a goal in a couple games and with us if we make one mistake it usually comes back to haunt us," Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis said.

The Revs have scored the fewest goals in MLS this season, and have been shut out in six of their last nine games.

"Nobody likes how we're going right now," New England defender Ryan Cochrane told his club's website. "It's basically (about) getting on the training field, putting a little extra work in and doing everything we can to kind of turn the tide here. It's nice that we have a shorter week. It's a quicker turnaround and it's good to get your mind looking forward instead of back. That's all you can do at this point."
