Toronto tops 'Caps to end winless streak

Jun 30, 2011 - 1:39 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto FC snapped a nine-game winless streak on Wednesday at BMO Field as Nick Soolsma's penalty kick was enough to give TFC a 1-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Whitecaps coach Tom Soehn elected to rest strikers Eric Hassli and Camilo as well as a number of other regulars as the club goes through a busy stretch of games and it showed as the team struggled badly in attack.

Earlier in the day Toronto (3-7-9) completed the signings of two new Designated Players with the club adding former Germany international midfielder Torsten Frings as well as PSV Eindhoven striker Danny Koevermans.

The addition of both players will be a welcome sight for TFC fans, who weren't exactly treated to an enthralling first 45 minutes on Wednesday.

Toronto's Mikael Yourassowsky was handed the best chance in the opening half when a loose ball was redirected into his path at the edge of the penalty area, but he fired wide of the net.

The match finally got a goal in the 52nd minute when Soolsma dribbled into the box and was tripped by Vancouver's Greg Janicki.

He then picked himself up and fired the subsequent penalty kick into the lower-left corner of the net.

The Whitecaps (2-8-8) generated a rare chance on the hour mark when Omar Salgado narrowly missed the right post with a shot from the edge of the area, and although both Hassli and Camilo entered the match as substitutes in the second half, it did little to spice up a dull attack.

Vancouver will get another crack at TFC on Saturday when the two sides meet in the second leg of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, with the aggregate level at 1-1.
