Dallas, Columbus want to build off lopsided wins
Jul 1, 2011 - 8:14 PM Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - FC Dallas and the Columbus Crew both produced fireworks in their last matches, and hope to have repeat performances at Pizza Hut Park on Saturday on Independence Day weekend.Dallas downed the Portland Timbers, 4-0, in their last match and Columbus beat the Colorado Rapids 4-1 in their last game and now the clubs - both second in their respective conferences - meet as the season moves into July.
The Texas club enters the match on a two-match win streak, and with 31 points from 15 matches, manager Schellas Hyndman's club is well on its way to another playoff appearance.
Dallas lost the MLS Cup to the Colorado Rapids last year, 2-1 in overtime, and have remained one of the better team's in the league despite the loss of 2010 league MVP David Ferreira to an ankle injury earlier this season.
Defenders Zach Loyd and George John scored the first two goals for Dallas last week against Portland, and Hyndman was pleased with the team's performance.
"I think all of our players really stepped up tonight," Hyndman said. "I think everybody had a good game, and I think we need those type of performances to continue to get those three points."
Dallas (9-4-4) stepped outside league play Tuesday and posted a 3-2 win over the Orlando City Blues in the last 16 of the U.S. Open Cup as Milton Rodriguez scored a late winner.
With its focus back on MLS, Dallas can become the first team in with 10 league wins this season with a victory over Columbus. Dallas could also move within a point of the Los Angeles Galaxy for first in the Western Conference.
The Crew (6-4-6) are just two points out of first in the Eastern Conference, and can overtake the Philadelphia Union with a win over Dallas.
Columbus won its second straight with the win over Colorado, and has won three of four since June 8. The other wins were against Real Salt Lake and Houston.
Andres Mendoza scored twice in the victory over Colorado, a game the Crew were actually trailing early. The four-goal game was Columbus' first since 2008 and Crew coach Robert Warzycha hopes the team maintains that momentum.
"We had a good performance ... against the current MLS champions, and to be able to score four goals and dominate the game is very encouraging going into July," Crew coach Robert Warzycha said.
