'Quakes try to end winless skid against in-form Union
Jul 8, 2011 - 9:20 PM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Union will try to extend its three match unbeaten run against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.Philadelphia has been a revelation this season in Major League Soccer, spending the majority of 2011 thus far in the top spot of the Eastern Conference. With two games in hand and sitting on 27 points, the Union will look to keep pace with Red Bull New York, currently in first place with 28 points.
In its last MLS outing, Philadelphia notched a late goal from Carlos Ruiz to save a point and ensure a 2-2 draw at D.C. United. On any other night, Philadelphia may have suffered a defeat to its local rival, but it has made has made a habit of salvaging points in matches where points were not necessarily earned.
"I think the important thing on a night like [Saturday], when we did not play well, we still got the point. We came back and tied the game in a very good fashion," said Union head coach Peter Nowak. "The boys are still fighting so this is a good sign and after half of the season right now it is good to be where we are right now."
Philadelphia will need to be resilient after dealing defender Jordan Harvey to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC this week for allocation money. Harvey has been a regular starter for the Union in his year and a half with the club.
In the previous meeting between the two clubs this season, the Union defeated the Earthquakes in Philadelphia in April thanks to a Sebastien Le Toux penalty kick.
Since that loss, San Jose has gone 4-2-4, but is winless in its last four MLS matches. The Earthquakes are coming off a 2-0 loss to Chivas USA, a match where they failed to create many goal scoring opportunities.
Creating chances may prove to be even more difficult as in-form striker Steven Lenhart is suspended for Saturday's match due to yellow card accumulation. The Earthquakes will rely on leading scorer Chris Wondolowski to shoulder the offense in Lenhart's absence.
