De Rosario goal lifts DC against New York

Jul 10, 2011 - 2:08 AM Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York's confidence took a major hit Saturday night, falling to rival DC United 1-0 at Red Bull Arena.

The only goal of the game came in the 61st minute from a man the Red Bulls are quite familiar with.

Dwayne De Rosario was playing for the Red Bulls a few weeks ago, until New York swapped the Canadian international for Dax McCarty on June 27th. And it was the newest DC United member who turned out to the difference in the match.

After some impressive link-up play, De Rosario ripped a shot past Red Bulls goalkeeper Greg Sutton that struck the post and went in, giving United the lead and ultimately the win.

A tame first half ended with a golden opportunity for DC United's Charlie Davies. Davies beat the offside trap, glided past Sutton, and was clear in on goal, but failed to convert as a sprinting Tim Ream tracked back to ensure that New York remained level at the break.

The near goal seemed to wake up the Red Bulls early in the second half. New York controlled the opening minutes, creating many chances but failing to convert.

But against the run of play, De Rosario's strike put a damper on a week that was looking bright for the Red Bulls, having demolished Toronto FC 5-0 Wednesday night. The fact that it was De Rosario who scored the telling goal must feel like salt in New York's open wounds.

The Red Bulls will try to bounce back on the 16th when they will face Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center, while will look to build on the important win against FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park the same night.
