Beckham leads Galaxy to 2-1 win over Fire
Jul 10, 2011 - 4:41 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - David Beckham had a goal and an assist and the Los Angeles Galaxy extend their undefeated streak to 12 games with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center.Beckham earned his eighth assist of the season on Landon Donovan's ninth goal of the year in the 58th minute, then scored directly off a corner kick in the 66th for his second goal of the season.
L.A. (10-2-9) last lost May 1 against FC Dallas, which is the only other club in Major League Soccer with 10 wins this season. Cristian Nazarit scored for Chicago (2-5-12), which lost for the first time in eight matches under interim coach Frank Klopas and nine games overall.
After a scoreless opening half, all three goals were scored in an eight-minute stretch of the second half.
Beckham set up the first goal off a free kick from the right wing, as he drove a cross over the six-yard box to Donovan at the far post. Donovan headed back to the right post to put L.A. in front after 58 minutes.
Donovan's goal moved him into a tie with Red Bull New York's Thierry Henry for the MLS scoring lead, but it only gave L.A. the lead for four minutes.
Patrick Nyarko sent a cross in from just outside the top-left edge of the area toward the far post, and Nazarit nodded a header from six yards into the lower left for his second goal of the season in the 62nd.
Beckham followed with the match-winner in the 66th, driving a low corner kick in from the left side that skipped through the six-yard box untouched and into the net.
Chicago will try to rebound on July 16 when it hosts the Portland Timbers, and L.A. will try to extend its streak to 13 matches on July 20 when it hosts the Columbus Crew.
