Donovan nets two goals as L.A. routs Vancouver
Jul 31, 2011 - 1:49 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Through 60 minutes at Empire Field on Saturday, Vancouver Whitecaps FC was playing on level terms with the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, the final 30 minutes of the contest saw L.A. tally four goals, including two from Landon Donovan, in a 4-0 win that extends the Galaxy's unbeaten streak to 14 games.
Vancouver has now earned just one point from its last six matches and continues to struggle at the bottom of the Western Conference.
The first half saw L.A. create a pair of decent chances as Juninho's effort from outside the penalty area forced goalkeeper Joe Cannon to tip the ball over the crossbar.
On the ensuing corner kick, Gregg Berhalter turned a header on target that was once again kept out by a good reaction stop from Cannon.
The hosts almost took the lead in the 59th minute when Shea Salinas saw his shot from the middle of the area come back off the post, but the Galaxy responded by taking the lead a few minutes later.
Sean Franklin's chip in behind the Vancouver defense allowed Donovan to track it down and calmly curl the ball around Cannon and into the net.
Camilo tested Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders with a well-taken free kick, but just a few minutes later, L.A. scored again as Whitecaps defender Jordan Harvey handled the ball inside his own area.
Donovan then stepped to the spot and converted his 11th goal of the season, which ties him with New York's Thierry Henry for the league lead.
Franklin extended the lead with nine minutes to play for the visitors, and Cristman capped the scoring just before the final whistle to complete a dominating 30 minutes of play.
