D.C. draws Toronto in six-goal thriller

Aug 7, 2011 - 1:50 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - While D.C. United overcame adversity on Saturday, they will feel unfortunate to not come away with three points after drawing 3-3 with Toronto FC at RFK Stadium.

The match began on a controversial note, as United goalkeeper Bill Hamid was sent off for a sliding challenge outside the goal area. Steve Cronin replaced Stephen King and played in goal for the remainder of the game.

Despite being down a man, D.C. United rallied and was able to conjure a goal shortly after Hamid's red card.

In the 19th minute, Dwayne De Rosario hit a scorching shot from distance that Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei got a hand to, but was unable to stop.

Peri Marosevic was able to equalize for Toronto early in the second half, slipping a shot from the six-yard box into the bottom corner.

De Rosario pulled United ahead again, taking advantage of a defensive miscue. A cross played in trickled past the first defender, and De Rosario capitalized on the mistake with some heads-up play, putting his shot past Frei.

Toronto substitute Julian De Guzman gave the Canadian side another tying goal, as he ripped a spectacular shot from 35 yards out that found the back of the net.

Andy Iro thought he had given Toronto all three points when he redirected a Danny Koevermans shot past Cronin in the 86th minute, but D.C. United went the length of the field from the restart and earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box. De Rosario completed his hat trick and tied the game.

De Rosario had a chance to win it in stoppage time for United, as he found himself one-on-one with Frei but chipped his shot wide of the post.

Both teams return to action on August 13th and will play at home, as D.C. United (6-6-9) host Vancouver Whitecaps FC at RFK Stadium and Toronto FC (3-11-11) host Real Salt Lake at BMO Field.
