Le Toux's PKs help Union draw FCD in Adu's debut

Aug 14, 2011 - 4:53 AM Chester, PA (Sports Network) - Sebastien Le Toux stole the spotlight from new Union teammate Freddy Adu on Saturday night.

Le Toux converted two penalty kicks, his second and third goals of the season, as the Philadelphia Union tied FC Dallas, 2-2, in Adu's return to Major League Soccer at PPL Park.

Adu debuted in MLS as a 14-year-old in 2004 but spent the last four seasons in Europe as the property of Portugal's Benfica, although he was out on loan with a number of clubs during that time.

Signed by Philadelphia on Friday to reunite with former coach Peter Nowak, who managed D.C. United when Adu played there from 2004-06, Adu started his first match back in the league.

"It was good. You always got to get the first one out of the way," Adu said. "I'm just glad we didn't lose the game.I thought we had a chance to win it at the end.

"We got a great team, man. Once we get on the same page, I think we're gonna be very difficult to beat."

Adu played 62 minutes, but Le Toux was responsible for both goals. Le Toux was able to equal out goals from Maicon Santos and Brek Shea - who scored his 10th goal of the season - from the spot.

Le Toux buried his first penalty in the 34th and his second with four minutes remaining, as 10-man Dallas was left frustrated with the draw.

Maicon Santos scored his first goal for Dallas since being acquired in a trade with Toronto FC, and seventh overall this season in the 16th minute. Shea sent in a rebound just before halftime to restore the cushion, but the Union would not be denied in Adu's debut.

Le Toux scored 14 goals last season, but had just one through 22 matches. That did not stop Nowak from sending him to the spot for a second time in the final minutes, and he did not disappoint.

He drove his second spot kick, which followed George John's sending off in the 82nd and was awarded when Jackson hauled down Gabriel Farfan, to the bottom- left corner with Dallas goalie Kevin Hartman going the wrong way.

"I thought it was a really wide open game. The fans in the stands got to see a really good game," Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said.

"I don't think, as a coach, any time you get a penalty kick called against your team you like it or want it. But those were the calls."

The Union (8-5-10) joined the 10-draw club - seven clubs already have at least that many - and lost ground on the Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference. The Crew beat New England on 3-1 and lead by three points. Philadelphia visits Columbus on Aug. 20.

Hartman made a big save in the last minutes on Danny Mwanga, who replaced Adu, as Dallas preserved a draw and moved within five points of idle Los Angeles in the Western Conference. Dallas (12-6-7) hosts Seattle Sounders FC on Aug. 20.
