L.A. comes from behind to edge RSL
Oct 2, 2011 - 4:55 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Galaxy garnered an impressive come-from-behind win on Saturday, defeating Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake 2-1 at The Home Depot Center.Fabian Espindola had put Real Salt Lake in front in the 45th minute, but Los Angeles responded in the second half through Chad Barrett and a fortunate own goal by Nat Borchers to improve its 2011 home record to 11-0-5.
Despite controlling much of the opening period, Los Angeles surrendered the lead just before halftime. Javier Morales sent a corner kick into the box where it was met by Espindola, who skimmed his header into the far side of the net.
The Galaxy found an equalizer in the 59th minute. A long ball from David Beckham led to a battle between Barrett and Real Salt Lake defender Jamison Olave. Barrett out-muscled the 2010 MLS Defender of the Year before flicking a shot over goalkeeper Nick Rimando and across the goal line.
The game-winner came in the 72nd minute when a ball pumped into the box found Todd Dunivant at the back post. The Galaxy defender knocked it back in front of goal where it was deflected by Borchers into his own net.
Los Angeles has won four straight league matches and is unbeaten in its last seven, posting a 6-0-1 record over that span.
Real Salt Lake, meanwhile, continues to struggle, as it drops its third straight regular season match. It was the third time this season that Salt Lake has lost after recording the opening goal, as RSL is now 15-3-1 when it scores first.
Both teams have already clinched a postseason berth, but they are still in contention for the MLS Supporters' Shield. The Galaxy lead MLS with 64 points on the season, while Salt Lake remains in third place overall with 51 points.
Los Angeles (18-3-10) returns to action on Tuesday in a marquee match at Red Bull New York, while Real Salt Lake (15-10-6) will try to regain its form on Thursday when it travels to BC Place to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
