Pride on the line for San Jose, New England

Oct 7, 2011 - 5:28 PM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - The New England Revolution and San Jose Earthquakes will square off at Gillette Stadium on Saturday with both clubs having been recently eliminated from playoff contention.

New England lost its third straight game last weekend, 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC, which officially eliminated the Revs from the playoffs, while San Jose was knocked out with a 2-0 win by Red Bull New York over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Tuesday.

The Revs have nothing to play for in terms of playoff positioning, but according to midfielder Chris Tierney, there is still plenty at stake.

"You have to be proud to be on this team and be in this league," said Tierney. "Any time you put on the jersey, whether or not it's for working toward the playoffs, you have to give it 100 percent and represent the club and represent yourselves well. That's always in the back of my mind when I go out there and I'm sure it is for the rest of us as well."

San Jose's last match ended in a 1-1 draw for the third successive time as a goal from Chris Wondolowski in the 85th minute was answered one minute later by Sporting Kansas City's Teal Bunbury.

The Earthquakes have won just six games so far this season while drawing 14 matches, which indicates an inability to close out wins for coach Frank Yallop.

"We have to see games out. Tonight is another example of that," Yallop said after the draw with Sporting. "What it comes down to though is we need to score more goals. A defensive mistake cost us tonight, but we need to put the game away earlier. I can't fault the guys for their effort. They put a lot of work in tonight, but we just cannot get the wins when we need them."

Wondolowski's goal was his fourth in six games and gives him 12 on the campaign. But the fact that the next leading scorer on the team has only five goals is a big reason why San Jose will be spending the postseason at home this year.

"We played hard for 85 or so minutes and unfortunately we just turned off mentally," said goalkeeper Jon Busch. "We got our goal, and then to give up the lead like that is frustrating. It's just a mental thing; we are being too complacent. That sums up or season in less than a minute. It was just another example of how our season has gone. We've got to learn how to win."
