Chivas, Vancouver aim to continue winning ways

Mar 14, 2014 - 10:16 PM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chivas USA and Vancouver Whitecaps FC square off at the StubHub Center on Sunday after both sides enjoyed winning starts to the 2014 MLS season last weekend.

After finishing with the second-fewest points in the league last season, the Goats got off to a great start with a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire thanks to Bobby Burling's 88th-minute header in the club's first game under new head coach Wilmer Cabrera.

The Whitecaps, meanwhile, turned in one of the most impressive performances of the weekend as they handed Supporters' Shield winners Red Bull New York a 4-1 defeat in the debut for Vancouver boss Carl Robinson.

Both Chivas and Vancouver missed the postseason last year, but with new coaches on board and a win to open the campaign both will be hoping to build on that momentum with another three points.

For Cabrera, the win over Chicago was a good example of his team's new mentality, while he also acknowledged after the game that there is still plenty of work to be done for Chivas to reach its desired level.

"The most important [thing] we take is that the mentality is appropriate for the start of the season," Cabrera said following the win. "We have to continue working hard, we have to fix a lot of things but the mentality is good, [the players] never gave up, we took the three points at home, and that's what really matters."

Offseason acquisition Mauro Rosales was impressive in his debut as he assisted on a pair of goals for Chivas, while Erick Torres picked up where he left off last season with a goal in the 56th minute after leading the club in scoring in 2013 despite playing only half the season.

The Whitecaps also were able to take plenty of positives from their performance as Kenny Miller scored twice and newcomers Sebastian Fernandez and Pedro Morales each found the net in their debut.

Robinson certainly had plenty to be pleased about after the win, but he knows that Chivas is also a rejuvenated side that will be hungry for more success.

"We know we have a tough game against Chivas on Sunday," Robinson told reporters. "They're a good team with a new manager and a simple and fluid system. We'll make sure we're able to deal with that, but we'll focus on what we do. If we perform to the level that we can, as shown on Saturday, then we're going to be a match for anyone."

Last season each team claimed a win in head-to-head action before a 2-2 draw in the third and final meeting.
