Sanchez helps Rapids earn draw at RBNY

Mar 15, 2014 - 10:19 PM Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Vicente Sanchez converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to help the Colorado Rapids claim a 1-1 draw against Red Bull New York at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

Thierry Henry's headed goal in the 57th minute had New York in front, but Marvin Chavez came off the bench for the Rapids and drew a foul inside the penalty area on Jamison Olave that allowed Sanchez to fire home the equalizer from the spot.

The result gives Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni a point in his first game in charge of the club, while New York has earned just one point in its first two games after suffering a 4-1 loss at Vancouver to open the campaign.

Colorado asked many of the questions in the first half with Dillon Serna and Jose Mari both forcing goalkeeper Luis Robles to make quality saves.

Tim Cahill went close for New York early in the second half when his header from Lloyd Sam's cross sailed just over the crossbar.

But it was another delivery from Sam seven minutes later that finally paid off as Henry arrived unmarked at the back post and scored on a diving header to put the home side in front.

The lead lasted 15 minutes, however, as Olave was called for a foul inside the penalty area on Chavez.

Sanchez stepped to the spot and drove the ball into the lower right corner just beyond the reach of Robles, denying the Red Bulls their first win of the campaign.
