Nguyen's late goal helps Revs edge 'Quakes

Mar 30, 2014 - 4:42 AM Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Lee Nguyen netted a late goal at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday, a strike that handed the New England Revolution a 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

After New England was held scoreless through its first three games of the season, an own goal from Victory Bernardez in the first half of Saturday's affair meant that Nguyen became the first Revolution player to score a goal this term.

The Revs took the lead 10 minutes before halftime when Bernardez, tracking back to prevent a loose ball from trickling into the goal, inadvertently conceded an own goal by turning his clearance into the back of the net.

San Jose answered in the 69th minute when Chris Wondolowski slammed home a failed clearance from close range, but Nguyen stuffed a set piece delivery from Scott Caldwell into the back of the net on the stroke of full time to give the Revs a dramatic win.

The 'Quakes remain in search of their first win of the season, taking just one point from their first three matches.

New England is 1-2-1 through its first four matches to improve to four points.
