RBNY, Montreal share the spoils
Apr 5, 2014 - 10:20 PM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Red Bull New York spurned a tremendous chance to get its first win of the season as it was held to a 2-2 draw by the Montreal Impact at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday. The Red Bulls, who entered the match on the back of three straight ties, fell behind early in Saturday's affair when Felipe Martins threaded a pass into the path of Andres Romero, who slipped a shot past the on-rushing Luis Robles.
But the visitors overturned the deficit before the close of the first half by grabbing two goals in the span of three minutes.
Jonny Steele produced the equalizer in the 31st minute when he turned in a cross from Lloyd Sam, and Peguy Luyindula netted the go-ahead goal shortly after by taking a pass from Steele and firing a right-footed shot past Troy Perkins for his second goal in as many games.
New York had a great chance to extend the lead early in the second period after Bradley Wright-Phillips was hauled down in the box by Matteo Ferrari, but Luyindula rattled his shot off the post on the ensuing penalty attempt.
The Red Bulls were left to rue that miss as Martins leveled the score at the hour mark with a brilliant snap-header from Justin Mapp's cross.
New York (0-1-4) is unbeaten in its last four matches while Montreal (0-3-2) has drawn two straight.
