'Quakes go for first win against Chivas USA

Apr 25, 2014 - 8:39 PM Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Jose Earthquakes will shoot for their first win of the season on Saturday when the club welcomes Western Conference rivals Chivas USA to Buck Shaw Stadium.

Through five games of the 2014 season, its been a struggle for the Earthquakes, who currently reside in the basement of the Western Conference with just three points.

But a win on Saturday would go a long way toward kick starting their season.

Last time out San Jose did well to earn a road point in a physical scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Chances were rare as both sides struggled to get any sort of offensive momentum on the rain-soaked field. The turning point of the match could have been an 86th minute red card to San Jose's Adam Jahn. But the 'Quakes defense held firm in sloppy conditions to earn a point.

Something head coach Mark Watson can take positives from.

"That's something we pride ourselves on, being tough to break down, and we hadn't quite gotten there this season," Watson said of his team's first shutout of the season. "I think it's a big deal.

"To get a point on the road anytime is a good result. We had some pretty good moments to score some goals. I don't know if there were too many shots on target, but we created some really dangerous situations just by our patience and our shape, looking for the moments to go forward."

Chivas, meanwhile, had their winless streak extended to six matches, Seattle Sounders FC came back for a 2-1 win on Saturday evening at StubHub Center. Chivas USA sit in seventh place in the Western Conference with six points from seven games.

Chivas USA were in the lead just five minutes into the match. Leandro Barrera was taken down just inside the box and referee Ismail Elfath awarded the penalty. Erick Torres converted with ease, beating Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei for his sixth goal of the season.

But Seattle pulled level in the 24th minute when Lamar Neagle fired it past Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

The match turned when Chivas midfielder Marco Delgado was sent off in the 73rd minute, and Sounders FC hit for the winner just eight minutes later. Obafemi Martins played a one-two with Dempsey, collecting the return pass in the area and beating Kennedy with a chip shot for the match-winner.

"I think on the field we're showing that we have possibilities to play with any team. It's not like we're defending or waiting to see when they're going to score on us. We play even with any team here and away and we're going to continue doing that," said Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera. "We have to recognize that we cannot make those mistakes with the first goal, that's a mistake that we cannot make because they're going to punish us and they did."
