Barnes lifts Dynamo over Galaxy
May 18, 2014 - 2:37 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - A second-half goal from Giles Barnes was enough to lift the Houston Dynamo to a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday. After a first half that saw the Galaxy get the better of the chances and fail to capitalize, Barnes made the most of a mistake from Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo to score the lone goal in the 61st minute.
Houston has now claimed three wins from its last four games, while the Galaxy's winless streak has reached four matches.
Los Angeles had the better of the play in the first 45 minutes, but Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall kept his team level with a fine stop on Juninho before defender David Horst came to his rescue in the 39th minute by clearing a shot from A.J. DeLaGarza off the goal line.
Andrew Driver struck the post after being picked out by a cross from Omar Cummings for Houston, but just three minutes later, Penedo came off his line and was beaten to the ball by Mark Sherrod, allowing him to feed Barnes for a first-time finish.
Substitute Raul Mendiola went close with a shot from outside the penalty area as the Galaxy attempted to find an equalizer, while Robbie Keane spurned a late chance as well when he fired into the outside of the net after being played into the area by Gyasi Zardes.
