RSL holds off Rapids to stay unbeaten

May 18, 2014 - 3:40 AM Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake drew first blood in its quest to regain the Rocky Mountain Cup on Saturday as RSL notched a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Joao Plata opened the scoring for Salt Lake midway through the first half, while Javier Morales scored from the penalty spot shortly after halftime.

Drew Moor pulled a goal back for the Rapids in the 83rd, but it wasn't enough to prevent a second straight defeat for Colorado, while RSL is now unbeaten in its first 11 games this season, one match shy of the Galaxy's record of 12 set in 1996.

After scoring a hat trick in his last fixture, Morales had a hand in the opening goal when he slid a pass into the penalty area for Plata, who rolled his shot across the face of goal and inside the far post.

Edson Buddle almost equalized on the stroke of halftime for the Rapids when his flicked header struck the post, while Moor brought down Devon Sandoval in the first five minutes of the second half to allow Morales to score from the spot.

Salt Lake goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made a nice stop on Dillon Serna as he pushed Serna's near-post shot to safety, but he couldn't keep a clean sheet as Moor scored from a Serna free kick seven minutes from time.
