Martins lifts Sounders over 'Quakes

May 18, 2014 - 4:11 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Sounders FC bounced back nicely on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field courtesy of a first-half strike from Obafemi Martins.

Last time out, Seattle suffered a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the white-hot New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium, but were on the front foot against the 'Quakes early and opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play.

Gonzalo Pineda got the play started when he slid the ball in behind the San Jose defenders down the left flank for Martins. With his back to goal, Martins chipped the ball over his shoulder and over the head of goalkeeper John Busch and into the bottom right corner for his fifth goal of the season.

San Jose had the better of the possession battle throughout the 90 minutes, but did little with the ball as the visitors managed just one strike on target.

The result sees the Sounders leap back into first place in the Western Conference with 25 points, two clear of second-place Real Salt Lake, while San Jose remains on 10 points and in sixth place in the West with the defeat.
