Stephenson's double sees 'Quakes top Dynamo

May 26, 2014 - 4:44 AM Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Khari Stephenson scored on either side of the intermission on Sunday as the San Jose Earthquakes coasted to a 3-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium.

San Jose opened the scoring in the 38th minute thanks to a mental error by Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall, who mistakenly picked up a back pass from defender David Horst, resulting in an indirect free kick inside the penalty area.

On the ensuing free kick, Shea Salinas tapped the ball over to Stephenson, who drove a low strike into the bottom left corner of the net for his first tally of the season.

The home side then made it 2-0 in the 58th minute as Steven Lenhart got behind the Houston defense and was hauled down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick which Stephenson buried for his second tally of the night.

Things then got even better for the hosts 20 minutes from time again via an error from Hall. Atiba Harris challenged Hall for a 50-50 ball on the edge of the area. He won the ball with a header off the post then coasted in for a tap-in to secure all three points for San Jose.

The result sees the 'Quakes improve to 13 points on the season, while the Dynamo remain on 17 points.
